Caerphilly Music Service

Contact details

Caerphilly Music Service delivers a vibrant and inclusive music programme across the county. The First Experiences scheme is now embedded in many schools, with some taking part for a second or third time. Sessions focus on whole-class tuition in instruments like recorder, ukulele, and singing, with flexibility to adapt for different year groups. A Second Step pathway is also in place, offering small group brass tuition through the pBuzz project.

Live music is a focus, with staff ensembles delivering engaging performances and workshops in primary schools, covering strings, brass and woodwind. These experiences are enriched through partnerships with organisations like the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and BBC NOW, who have delivered live concerts to schools over the past three years.

Ensembles remain a key part of progression. Weekly rehearsals support junior and senior wind bands, string groups, a percussion ensemble, and a choir for primary pupils. Regular concerts and summer courses give young musicians the chance to perform, collaborate, and develop their skills as part of larger ensembles.

Inclusion and professional learning are priorities. All tutors receive additional learning needs training, with recent funding supporting delivery and specialist equipment for Trinity Fields School. Primary teachers benefit from continuous professional development sessions delivered in partnership with the local authority, including Charanga training and pBuzz support.

Flexible service level agreements allow schools to shape their own music provision, from First Experiences to instrumental lessons and ensemble support. Schools are encouraged to take up the funded national offer, helping ensure access to music for all learners across Caerphilly.
