Cardiff and Vale Music Education is the lead music service for Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, delivering a dynamic and inclusive programme for learners of all ages. Based at Chapter Arts Centre, the service offers in and out of school tuition, ensembles, performances, continuous professional development for tutors, workshops, and access to a musical instrument library. It works in partnership with organisations including BBC NOW, Welsh National Opera, Welsh College of Music and Drama, and local authorities to strengthen music education across the region.
As the lead delivery partner for the National Plan for Music Education in both counties, the service has engaged over 18,000 children through First Experiences. Delivery models are tailored to school needs, with training and mentoring provided for classroom teachers. Work in additional learning needs settings includes bespoke group music-making and Open Orchestras, while live music experiences have reached more than 17,900 pupils across both counties.
Progression is supported through a range of ensembles and programmes such as Music Pathways and Camau Cerdd, engaging over 1,400 learners in songwriting, DJ skills, orchestral training, and industry-linked projects like Little Gigs and Band in a Day. Ensemble numbers have grown to 692, with new groups established for beginners, intermediate musicians, and a regional choir through collaboration with the National Music Service.
Wellbeing and accessibility remain at the heart of the service. Music therapy supports pupils across Cardiff, community programmes like Soundworks provide for adults with learning disabilities, and free or subsidised access ensures music is open to all.
