Wrexham, Denbigh and Conwy Music Co-operative delivers broad and inclusive music experiences. From bilingual instrumental and vocal lessons to whole-class First Experiences in samba, pBuzz, ukulele and more. All pupils are supported to explore and enjoy music. Live performances, including the popular ‘Make Some Noise’ band, help bring music to life in schools.
All primary schools in Conwy are offered First Experiences in music, giving pupils the opportunity to explore instruments such as ukalele, African drumming, samba kit, vocals, and DJing. The provision usually targets year 3, with 45-minute sessions over a 5 to 6-week period, and extends to smaller schools where appropriate.
To widen access, various programmes have been developed such as Make Some Noise, Gresford i’r Goleuni, and Slumbersaurus. These provide performance opportunities and workshops with BBC NOW, New Sinfonia and professional musicians.
A variety of ensembles run weekly, including orchestras, bands, pop groups, Llandudno GIG Club, and a vocal ensemble. An orchestra and additional ensembles at Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy also provide performance opportunities and experiences for pupils.
The Service operates an Open Orchestra project in a special school, providing music therapy and using Charanga as a learning resource. A programme called Curriculum Support supports primary teachers to include music in their lessons, and composition courses have helped GCSE pupils create and share their musical work.
