Merthyr Music Service

Merthyr Tydfil Music Service is dedicated to making music education accessible, creative, and high-quality for children and young people across the borough. It offers a wide range of learning opportunities, including one-to-one lessons, small group sessions, and whole-class instrumental tuition. Schools that join the Service Level Agreement can provide entire year groups with expert-led music instruction.

A key initiative, First Experiences, ensures every Year 3 and 4 pupil receives weekly music lessons for ten weeks. This inclusive programme opens doors for children who might not otherwise have access to music education, and culminates in lively winter and summer showcases where pupils perform for families and peers—fostering confidence and community pride.

The service enriches the Expressive Arts curriculum through partnerships with organisations like Upbeat Music and Arts. Pupils engage in diverse activities such as Djembe drumming, Welsh heritage-inspired music and dance, and creative songwriting with specialists like The Songwriting Doctor and The Welsh Whisperer. These sessions combine music with literacy and digital skills, empowering learners to create and perform original work.

Teachers benefit from professional development opportunities, including training in Charanga, a leading music education platform, and CPD workshops delivered by industry experts. These sessions help educators integrate music more effectively into their teaching, and have been met with enthusiasm across schools.

Beyond the classroom, young musicians can join Merthyr Tydfil’s free weekly orchestra, open to all ages and abilities. Highlights include performing alongside the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, offering an inspiring experience for participants. The service also prioritises inclusion, working with a qualified Music Therapist to support learners with Additional Learning Needs, ensuring music remains a meaningful and therapeutic experience for everyone.
