Powys Music

Contact details

Powys offers rich musical opportunities for pupils, including 10 weeks of whole-class instrument tuition and funded taster sessions. Pupils who are eligible for free school meals receive funded lessons each term. Ensembles, orchestras, choirs, and pop bands are held outside school hours. Live music experiences are brought to schools through partnerships with LIVE Music Now Cymru, Welsh National Orchestra, and BBC NOW, with funding for pupils to attend live performances across Wales.

Schools receive support to embed music into the Curriculum for Wales, with cluster-wide planning and skill progression. An accredited list of musicians ensures safe, high-quality tuition, while continuous professional development opportunities help tutors adapt to curriculum changes, creating a connected and well-supported music education network.

Powys works closely with local music charities like South Powys Youth Music and North Powys Youth Band, offering pupils access to instruments, ensembles, and ongoing musical development. These partnerships strengthen connections between schools and local communities, nurturing young talent.

Regional collaborations provide even more experiences beyond school, including orchestral and choir residencies, side-by-side events with BBC NOW, and workshops with National Youth Arts Wales. These opportunities bring pupils together to share the joy of music on a larger scale.
