Bridgend Schools Music Service provides instrumental and vocal tuition to pupils across the county borough, giving young people the chance to experience and enjoy making music. From primary beginners to advanced secondary school musicians, the service helps learners build skills, confidence and a love of music.

As well as lessons in schools, the service runs a wide range of ensembles, including orchestras, choirs and bands. Many pupils attend weekly rehearsals, where they can develop their playing, make friends and prepare for performances. Concerts and community events are a regular highlight, giving young musicians the opportunity to showcase their talents.

The service offers one-to-one, small group and whole-class tuition across strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, guitar, piano, harp and voice. Schools can also access programmes such as samba drumming, ukulele, violin and beginner-friendly plastic instruments, giving every child a first experience of music. Alongside lessons, Bridgend Music Service supports schools with curriculum delivery and bespoke packages designed to meet learners’ needs.

Beyond the classroom, pupils are encouraged to join county ensembles, residential courses and even international tours, with recent performance opportunities including St David’s Hall and Hoddinott Hall Cardiff, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and Disneyland Paris. The service also provides free instrument loans, inclusive access initiatives, and strong progression links with national organisations such as BBC NOW, National Youth Arts Wales, Music for Youth, and the Royal Corps of Army Music. Recent recognition includes a Mayor’s Citizenship Award (2025) for the service’s contribution to the community and record participation growth in instrumental learning and ensembles.

Bridgend Music Service plays a vital role in the cultural life of the county and continues to ensure that children and young people can learn, perform and thrive through music.
